Dan Taylor came from a family that had a member who served and died in every American war. He first met Forrest Gump in an army camp in Vietnam. Forrest saved Lieutenant Dan from certain death during the war, but Dan lost his legs due to injuries. When Forrest told Lieutenant Dan that the was going to be a shrimping boat captain, Dan sarcastically said that if Forrest ever became a shrimping boat captain, he would be Forrest's first mate. The two men went on to work together as friends in the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company.
